Nuwani's Fishing Lessons

Empowering young girls to chase their dreams!

Project Overview

Children’s Book • Room to Read Project • 2019

The blend between a Honduran culture researcher & teacher and a passionate illustrator is what birthed the wave crashing book of Nuwani’s Fishing Lesson (“La Lección de Pesca de Nuwani” in Spanish).

Teresa Leyva, author of this wonderful book, wrote the story of a Garifuna girl chasing her dreams by believing in herself. As my first children book illustration project, led by a series of workshops given by the Room to Read Staff, it was my duty to absorb, embrace and transform Teresa’s vision and words into a reality. And what an extraordinary opportunity to channel this task than by using my favorite paint medium… watercolors.

After much research in the Garifuna culture, color and texture trials Nuwani was finally born. A book to empower our local Garifuna communities and young girls to chase for their dreams.
