The Campesino’s Dream

The Campesino’s Dream When two cultures meet to tell a strong narrative. Project Overview Children’s Book • Freelance • 2023 -2024 Nick Higgins, a teacher, musician, author and devotee from the United States fell in love with Honduras and wanted to tell a story. However the approach of this narrative’s topic is a hard reality many Hondurans face, migration for a better life. As a Honduran Illustrator it was a challenging topic, but I decided it was my duty to translate this manuscript into a cozy visual story, honoring a narrative that is not entirely mine and still maintaining the essence of what Nick wanted to portray. My role didn’t stop in the illustration. Many revisions and edits were made to adequate the story to a more Honduran context, the traditions, the lexicon and other visual and cultural elements that speak “Honduras”. This project was my first approach to children’s book illustration digitally, and while many revisions and edits took place (as well as extra scenes from the original manuscript), the main goal; portray key aspects of Nick’s experience living and visiting Honduras that were preserved. And so we delivered a wonderful story. Nuwanis Fishing Lessons

Nuwani’s Fishing Lessons

Camila and her Magical Umbrella Empowering young girls to chase their dreams! Project Overview Children’s Book • Room to Read Project • 2019 The blend between a Honduran culture researcher & teacher and a passionate illustrator is what birthed the wave crashing book of Nuwani’s Fishing Lesson (“La Lección de Pesca de Nuwani” in Spanish). Teresa Leyva, author of this wonderful book, wrote the story of a Garifuna girl chasing her dreams by believing in herself. As my first children book illustration project, led by a series of workshops given by the Room to Read Staff, it was my duty to absorb, embrace and transform Teresa’s vision and words into a reality. And what an extraordinary opportunity to channel this task than by using my favorite paint medium… watercolors. After much research in the Garifuna culture, color and texture trials Nuwani was finally born. A book to empower our local Garifuna communities and young girls to chase for their dreams.
